4 Year Old Hoochie Mamas?
October 12th 2006 03:24
So one of the latest debates circling the Mommyblog circuit is the Hoochie Mama crap that we have to choose from at Wal-Mart, Target, and the like. Short skirts, crop tops, even high boots and thongs. Thongs!
What in the world would posess a manufacturer to create such things for 4, 6, and 8 year olds? Why don't we just feed the epidemic of pedophilia a little more?
Sexualizing our children is absolutely W.R.O.N.G. Wrong on SO many levels. The internet isn't the only place you're going find creepy guys looking at your kids. After watching Dateline's To Catch a Predator, any fool can see that these guys are normal looking men. Men we work with, men who coach our children, men who counsel our children in education, church, extracurricular activities. Men who are our neighbours, our kid's friends' fathers, our relatives. And they are looking at our kids. If we dress our daughters in these kinds of clothes, are we simply asking for trouble?
Am I picking on men? No. Men just make up 99.9% of pedophiles. Dateline has worked with Perverted Justice for over a year now and PJ says not once have they run into a female perpetrator.
Getting back to the topic at hand: parents...are you pissed about these clothes being sold? What are you doing about it?

I hate seeing other 12 year olds with their bras being worn above their "neckline", or with the straps of their thongs worn above the wasteline of their pants! I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUR UNDERWEAR, CHILD!
This is one reason among many that my kids are homeschooled, and why I take an active role in their shopping choices. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look good or be attractive, but there's a huge difference between being "sensual" and being "trashy".
It'd be easy to blame the manufacturers and try to make them stop producing such junk, but the sad truth is, they wouldn't make it if it didn't sell - and it does sell.
I try to help my daughter understand that the kind of attention she'd get for being a "hooch" is NOT the kind of attention she wants. Fortunately for me, so far, she agrees. And lucky for us both, we don't have the peer pressure to contend with.
