Parent Debates by Tamra

SLOW DOWN!

February 7th 2008 00:58
And I don’t mean on the treadmill at the gym. I mean when you’re driving around school/s. For heaven’s sake people, it’s not the Bathurst 1000. Just watch, tomorrow morning, seemingly normal parents will be screaming up that ‘Drive 40 For Me’ road, braking to only just avoid hitting your child and driving their kids up onto the pedestrian crossings outside school!
Fragile

What is it about school zones that turn reasonably sensible people into mad, irate, rule-breaking petrol-heads? People are pulling stunts outside schools that would send the RTA into a tailspin. Double-parking opposite school gates; parking in disabled zones without actual children with disabilities; driving up one-way streets the wrong way, and mounting the footpath to avoid having their children actually step up onto them!!??

And don't get me started on the four wheel drives... Look, if you want to drive around city streets wasting the world's precious reserve on fuel so that you can be just that little bit higher than everyone else, fine. No, go ahead, but for heaven's sake get some decent rear vision mirrors or a reversing camera. I think, and don't quote me, but I think that when a child gets hit from a reversing, large, four-wheel-drive it hurts as much, if not more, than when a small sedan does the same thing. But look whether you're driving a hummer or a citysmart DihatsuyBabyCino, let's not forget our young pedestrians. They're all precious, whether they're yours or someone else's. That meeting, that shopping, that bridge can wait one more minute for you, so slow down and don't smell the rubber. Tamra

Where have all the bikes gone? Why don't kids ride to school anymore? The bike shed used to bigger than the classrooms and they have all but disappeared.

That's a really good point anon. It would keep more of them fit as well..

Too true - of course biking associations are trying to get people to ride to work and school, see: www.bicyclensw.org.au but local councils, the RTA and, Govt. have to get serious about supporting ecologically sustainable transport AND healthy active travel for our increasingly overweight kids, and make the infrastructure better. A bit chicken and egg, but I think if more parens encouraged riding, it would create a lobby group to encourage and insist on change. Viva la Revolution!

I would like to know what is wrong with students walking to school or riding their bikes. I have seen bus stops in my area that was just two or three drive ways away from the school

Cristy, it seems to be all about parents taking action these days. If you put enough combined pressure on the school, the buses will follow. If parents combine their resources, 'walking buses' are created. Biking isn't as easy as it once was with cars taking precedence but there's no reason why kids can't ride if monitored by grown ups and walking's a whole lot more fun than trying to find a park outside school! And of course it's better for you, your kids and the planet.
